In the last blog, we have talked about affairs – why people have them and the effect they can have:
So this month, I thought we’d take a look at the importance of trust in a relationship and how to build it.
The importance of trust
Trust is the foundation of any successful relationship. It’s the invisible force that holds couples together through the ups and downs of life and, without it, a relationship can crumble.
Trust can:
- Create intimacy.
- Enhance communication.
- Provide security.
- Reduce jealousy and insecurity.

How to build trust
Trust doesn’t magically appear overnight. To build and maintain trust takes time, effort, and communication.
Open and honest communication: Effective communication is the foundation of trust. Share your thoughts, feelings, and concerns openly and honestly. This can be easier said than done, as you may have to make yourself vulnerable – but this is exactly what creates the trust: being able to express yourself and be yourself, and trusting your partner not to take advantage of your vulnerability. Being open and vulnerable also encourages your partner to be equally open, which builds mutual trust.
Being reliable and dependable: Keeping your promises and being reliable and consistent in your actions builds trust over time.
Setting boundaries: Boundaries are crucial for maintaining trust. Discuss and establish boundaries that both you and your partner are comfortable with, and respect each other’s limits.
Avoiding secrecy: Being transparent in your actions and intentions fosters trust. Keeping secrets or engaging in suspicious behaviour can erode it.
Building a friendship: A strong emotional connection forms the basis of trust. While it’s ok to have separate hobbies and interests, it’s also important to be friends with your partner by spending time together through shared interests, values, and experiences.
Trust is the basis of any successful relationship. It underpins emotional intimacy, communication, and long-term commitment, but building and maintaining trust is an ongoing process, requiring effort, transparency, and open communication.
Building trust isn’t always an easy process, especially if you have been let down or betrayed in the past, and if you are really struggling to build trust in your relationships, then counselling may help you to uncover and work through any blocks.

Next month, we’ll take a look at ways of how trust can be rebuilt in a relationship once it has been broken.
Until next time,
